"The wandering soul drew Robert Louis Stevenson to Samoa"

Fragile health and a wandering soul drew Robert Louis Stevenson to Samoa. This view, toward Apia, is from near his grave site. He and his extended family began to build a home, called Vailima, in these hills in 1890.

A clock tower and the Central Bank are landmarks in Apia, capital of Samoa, once known as Western Samoa. The population today is 220,000 in Samoa, 65,000 in American Samoa.
